A Legacy of Joy, Resilience, and Community
Nestled along the shores of history, Sparrow's Beach stands as a testament of Mary "Florence" Carr Sparrow being one of the smartest business woman during her time.
This was not merely a beach; it was a bold declaration of joy, community, and inclusion during the challenging times of segregation. As a celebrated stop on the Chitlin' Circuit, Sparrow's Beach resonated with the soulful tunes of legendary Black performers from Motown and local entertainment.
Florence opened her arms to African Americans, transforming the beach into an oasis where laughter harmonized with the rhythmic waves.
Sparrow's Beach is a living legacy because it resonates with the values instilled by Florence's father, Frederick Louis Carr. Beyond the sun-soaked shores of the Chesapeake Bay, it embodies the enduring warmth of family and the strength of community. Sparrow's Beach was a period in time and history, forever etched in the memories of those who visited. Florence's and her sisters' entrepreneurial spirit had motel rooms, boat rides, entertainment, and food stands, crafting vivid experiences for all who stepped onto the beaches.
Carr's Beach Amusement Company, better known as "Carr's Beach," was owned and operated by Florence's sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Carr Smith. Promoters would rent out the beach, attracting some of the greatest Black Entertainers to perform.
Minnie's Inn was owned and operated by Minnie Blackwell, Florence Sparrow's older sister. It was a popular establishment that provided lodging and dining services to beachgoers. Minnie was deeply involved in the family's entrepreneurial ventures.
Nancy Thomas, the oldest sister, was a guiding force in the family. She ingrained a sense of responsibility in all her siblings, ensuring they would carry their father's legacy.
Despite facing significant challenges, including losing over 35 acres due to eminent domain, Florence Sparrow valiantly fought to preserve the land her father had worked so hard to leave as a legacy for his children.
Her resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the strength of her family's entrepreneurial spirit. In their pursuit of personal gain, the State of Maryland and the City of Annapolis should not be using our family name of Carr's and Sparrow's Beach, especially since they seized my grandmother's property in 1971.
Join the Sparrow Family, the grandchildren of Florence Sparrow, as we share personal pictures that encapsulate the essence of Sparrow's Beach, her grandmother, and more.
This heartfelt journey is a significant tribute to the enduring spirit of Florence Sparrow, a pivotal figure in African-American history.
The family's deep love and commitment to their grandmother drives us to preserve and ensure that the Sparrow legacy lives on.
